Futures of Artificial Intelligence Research (FAIR) is an interdisciplinary Millennium Nucleus of research and creation, focused on Artificial Intelligence’s (AI) cultural, social, and environmental implications.
Our goal is to create frameworks of thought and knowledge from Chile and LatAm on the development and effects of AI technologies, and contribute to guide the possible scenarios that they might install, from the constitution of cultural imaginaries to the impact on public policies.
We seek to open spaces for collaboration, learning and experimentation that bring together critical perspectives from the social sciences, humanities, and computer science, and to expand empirical research and theoretical reflection, promoting the exchange between local and international communities.
Research Line 1
AI, Social justice, and Citizenship
This axis seeks to understand AI systems transformations, its impact on everyday life, and the implications of the emerging new ways of digital citizenship.
Furthermore, we will try to understand the effect that the use of these technologies has in public agencies, studying both the challenges it carries for those who manage them, and the organizational and decision-making dynamics that lead to developing AI based public services. Our interest is to understand, from a data justice framework, the arising needs from the diverse groups of affected people and users.
Research Line 2
AI, Cultural Imaginaries, and Futures Design
Given the premise that AI-human relations require new ontologies and cultural production practices, we will research, in one hand, AI imaginaries on literature, films, visual arts, and videogames, and, on the other hand, AI’s future scenarios for artistic experimentation and its placement in Latin America.
By the latter, we intend to describe and analyze the new AI tools applied in the digital arts; to analyze, from a genealogical-historical point of view, the epistemologies, aesthetics, and narratives that support literary and artistic production on AI; and, to explore the ways in which cultural productions report and affect those who make the decisions in AI technologies.
Research Line 3
AI, Experimentation, and Responsible Innovation
Alternatives for AI algorithms implementation and transparency will be tested through prototypes and experimental designs. This will be done in order to analyze the necessary conditions for a more inclusive future regarding the use and application of AI technologies.
The goal is to understand the confidence in AI of users, developers, decision-makers and affected people in Chile and LatAmFrom this analysis, we intend to develop evidence-based recommendations for the responsible use and experimentation of new systems, and help build them based on social justice.
